The conventional flowering tropicals we normally associate with Hawai`i will not blossom at Koele because of the unusually cool climate there. This peculiar circumstance allowed us to utilize a unique plant vocabulary and create a landscape setting unlike any other in the islands.
Many of the existing Norfolk Island Pines, Jacarandas, Banyans and Eucalyptus trees would be retained to enhance the sense the visitor had entered another time and place.
In fact the entire west wing of the lodge was extended further than the east wing to accommodate an existing window of pines.
Croquet and lawn bowling courts, an orchid conservatory and a gazebo were integrated into the landscape for recreation and to compliment the open grounds.
