The Hawai'i Convention Center is not a “building with landscaping" but rather a landscaped building, conceived as a series of green terraces with palm groves and falling water as its central elements. The landscape is grasped through each human sense. The fragrance of flowers, the sounds of water and leaves in the breeze, floral textures and colors all combine to provide a landscape experience offered by no other convention center. The emphasis on native Hawaiian plant material communicates the basic elements of Hawaiian culture to the visitor. For many it will be the only exposure to the important ways native Hawaiians utilized their natural surroundings. The landscape is meant to not only please the eye, but educate as well. |
