Kalia Tower, located at the corner of Kalia Road and Ala Moana Boulevard presented the design team with several unique challenges: how to create a resort setting within such an urban context, how to create an open and inviting entry to the project while still affording its guests privacy and intimacy, and how to provide circulation while minimizing intrusion into the open spaces.
A meandering walkway within a lush landscape of tropical foliage and trees, an expansive lawn area and cascading waterfalls provide an inviting atmosphere for guests and the general public alike.
Hala, Kukui, Breadfruit, Ti, and Coconut Palm were used to further enhance the Hawaiian sense of place. Three bronze statues of twice-lifesize kahiko hula dancers set on rocks in the middle of a reflective pond provided a focal point and dramatic photo opportunity. The landscape theme is continued through the interior of the building which facilitates in the creation of comfortable sitting areas amid an overwhelmingly large space.
